Who is Bidhan Chandra Ray?

Bidhan Chandra Ray was the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. He held that position from 1948 until his death. He also had a special reputation as a physician. In 1911 he started his teaching and medical career at the Campbell Medical School (now Neelaratan Sarkar Medical College), Calcutta, after obtaining his MRCP and FRCS degrees from England.Later elected a member of Calcutta University Senate, Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and Fellow of American Society of Chest Physicians. In 1923, he joined politics under the influence of Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das and defeated Surendranath Bandyopadhyay in the Bengali Executive Assembly elections. Later he was elected General Secretary of Calcutta Congress and Mayor of Calcutta Municipality.


In 1931 he joined the civil disobedience movement called by Mahatma Gandhi and imprisoned. In 1942 he was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University. In 1947, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly as a Congress candidate from Calcutta University Constituency. In 1948 he took over the responsibility of Chief Minister of West Bengal.

Bidhan Chandra Ray founded five new cities: Durgapur, Bidhannagar, Kalyani, Ashoknagar-Kalyanagarh and Habra. Bidhan Chandra Ray (Bidhan Chandra Ray) during his fourteen-year chief ministership saw great progress in the newly formed state of West Bengal, which is why he is called the architect of West Bengal.  Under the influence of Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, the undisputed public leader of Bengal and India, Bidhan Chandra joined politics in 1923 AD. Bidhanchandra contested the elections for his Swaraj Dal and was elected as a member of the Bengal Executive Council.
