On January 26, when independent India became a republic, Harilal Jekisundas Kaniya became the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the country and took his oath in front of the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. His tenure was from 26 January 1950 to 06 November 1951.
